All the wood we could find has been split and stacked, and the outdoor furniture put away. We could not find the canoe. We played with some rocks over the new septic area and spread some seed. It was a week or two early to bother cleaning the gutters. The indoor furniture has been arranged so that the baseboard heaters won't be a fire hazard, and the number of lamps in the guest room has been reduced from 47 to 20 something. The freezables and perishables are out of the fridge with the exception of a mason jar half full of pickled eggs. We deliberated on this for two days as no one in our party was brave enough to eat them, or throw them out, so we finally decided that they would be ok.
Not having done the winterization in a decade or two, I realized on the way home that I made two mistakes. First, I did not open the shower valves, so the plumbing between the valves and head are at risk. It's an interior wall, and I would guess that the valves may leak a bit, so it may be OK, but maybe not. Maybe Jack could stop by and crack them open if you think it may be a problem. I did do the shower drain, however. Second, I turned off the water pump at the switch on the wall in the crawl space as usual so the next guy doesn't have to go down in the dark. Upon completing everything I wanted to make sure the switch in the crawl space was indeed off so I went to turn on the water pump breaker at the panel to make sure that the pump would not run, but I inadvertently hit the water heater breaker....only for a split second. Probably not long enough to burn out the elements, but who knows? I did not see any spare elements in the closet. Not a bad thing to have on hand anyway so here is the info as I doubt I will be back before summer.
Reliance Water Heater Co.
Model# 630DORT
Ser#G04244383
30 Gallon
4500 Watt Elements (top & bottom)
240VAC
Sorry for the blunders.
Does anyone make a submersible pump for a 2" well? I've never seen one and was wondering if that is something you have looked into. Sure would simplify the process. Also, upon our arrival the pump took a very long time to self prime. I don't know how long that pump is designed to run dry, if at all. It finally caught just as I was looking for a container to go down and prime it....3 minutes, perhaps longer?

Cabin Update/Burn Ban
May 2009. All the wood is now cut, split and stacked. The size of the pile is a bit disappointing. I estimate it would keep us warm for about 6 days in the middle of winter. We had a fire a few mornings and each evening while we were there. It was not a trip for shorts and t-shirts. The building is fine but the lake is in trouble.
Jaci & I attended the annual meeting and paid the annual dues. This was the first assessment in a couple of years as expenditures were low and treasury was high. Not so any more. Lake level and the water table are both w-a-y down. The lake is down 40" in the last 5 years. The drought is on its 7th year. I stood on the old lake bottom off the end of our dock and my armpits (48" from the soles of my shoes) were barely able to reach the dock. Some possible suggestions include:
1. Shower every third day and then with a friend
2. Don't flush unless your bowels move
3. Do Laundry in town
4. Don't water your lawn
5. Do rain dance and pray
The canoe is next door at Butler's and the kayaks are out of the crawl space. Paddles and PFD's are in the shed. I think I can build a floating extension for about $600. Brad, can you get the flotation blocks?
There is still a burn ban in the north woods. Hope it is lifted by the time you folks begin using the cabin. Some of the white plastic furniture has been scrubbed and painted. Thanks Jaci. Store it inside when you leave to keep it looking good.

Hello to All:
The Hazelhurst Hilton is up and running for another season. The lake is up a bit from last year but it is only spring. The total precipitation in April exceeded Jan, Feb, March & the first 15 days in April combined. To say it is dry is an understatement. There is still a burn ban in northern WI. We drove north on Sat after Brian left and it rained most of the way. It also rained for the first 3 days we were there. That melted the 5 inches of snow that fell on Thur. Such is the weather in April in the north woods.
Getting the pump going was a bit more time consuming than usual but it is all OK now. Brad, thanks for the use of the miter saw. All the baseboard is now up. Thanks, also for the splitting axe. I would be there yet splitting wood with a regular axe. Most of the wood is drying nicely on the rack and under the tarp. Thanks to all my children for that. The big rack is about half full. Hope we do not need it before Oct. There are still a few logs to cut and more than a few to split. The fire made it very warm and cozy for our visit. Splitting wood warms one up also.
Reservations insofar are:
Pat & Wanda July 29 - Aug. 5
Shari, Jeff & Parker Aug 21 - 31
Jaci & Dad July 10-18
We were a bit early for the spring bird migration or maybe the weather was just too cold. The ice is gone on the lake and we heard the loons but did not see them. Pileated woodpecker, red, grey & black squirrels, chipmunks, deer, finches (gold ones have changed already), one immature eagle, hooded & commom mergansers, mallards, muskrat were about the limit on the wildlife. We even took a drive on the one nice day to Powell Marsh Wildlife Refuge but it was so cold and windy all the geese, ducks and cranes were hunkered down in the tall grass.
P.S. Brad and Sheryl have a commitment in the U.P. Aug 18 and plan to continue West to the Hilton, overlapping S. J. & P. for a day. Hoping for another trip in Sep. or Oct.
